Tackling Special Material Technologies | Xi’an Pump & Valve Works Builds Core Equipment Barriers for Process Industry

As a main force and pioneer in China’s special pump and valve industry, Xi’an Pump & Valve Works Co., Ltd. (formerly Xi’an High Pressure Valve Factory, founded in 1958) has engaged in the engineering application of rare metals such as titanium, zirconium, nickel and special alloys for over 60 years.

It is among China’s earliest manufacturers realizing domestic substitution of special material valves. Supported by the National Postdoctoral Research Workstation and the Xi’an Pump & Valve–Xi’an Jiaotong University Technology Research Institute, the company has established a full-chain R&D system covering material smelting, vacuum casting and hydraulic design for extreme working conditions.

A national-level “Specialized, Refined, Differential and Innovative Little Giant” enterprise, Xi’an Pump & Valve safeguards the security of industrial and supply chains in the process industry with robust technological strength.

Between 2021 and 2025, targeting bottleneck-prone extreme working conditions in polyester, acetic acid, petrochemical refining and new energy materials sectors, the enterprise successively launched four categories of internationally competitive core products. These products have passed authoritative industrial appraisals on multiple occasions and filled a number of domestic technological gaps.

Large-Scale Special Material Valves Serve Upgrading of Polyester Industry

In April 2021, the China General Machinery Industry Association (CGMA) organized a product appraisal meeting in Xi’an for the NPS20 Large-Bore Double-Plug Plate Cock Valve and CPF2 Continuous Polymer Filter System for Polyester Melt.

The expert panel concluded that the successful development of the NPS20 large-bore cock valve marks a crucial leap for the company’s special material technology from specialization and differentiation toward large-scale manufacturing. It effectively meets the demands of capacity consolidation and high-value-added transformation in the chemical fiber and polyester sector. Meanwhile, the polyester melt filter system delivers high-efficiency continuous filtration and stable operation. Both products have been accredited as internationally advanced, bringing remarkable economic and social benefits.

Overcoming Severe Corrosion Challenges to Safeguard Million-Ton Acetic Acid Plants

In January 2023, the China General Machinery Industry Association (CGMA) organized a hybrid on-site and online appraisal meeting held in Xi’an and Beijing for the Large-Bore Double-Plate Zirconium Alloy Cock Valve and Zirconium Mother Liquor Circulation Pump.

Targeting highly corrosive media in acetic acid production units, the enterprise innovatively developed an integrally forged plug structure with flow guide plates, quadruple stem sealing technology for valves, as well as micro-gap flow straighteners in pump suction chambers and stepped thermal oxidation surface hardening technology for pump shafts.

The appraisal committee confirmed that the two products fill domestic technological gaps, with key performance indicators reaching the advanced level of similar international products. They can deliver long-cycle, highly reliable domestic solutions for million-ton acetic acid facilities.

Challenging the Limits of Multiphase Flow to Tackle Transportation of High Gas Volume Fraction Media

In February 2024, the China General Machinery Industry Association (CGMA) convened a product appraisal meeting in Xi’an for the High Gas Volume Fraction Gas-Liquid Two-Phase Flow Pump.

The product innovatively adopts a three-dimensional twisted impeller integrating axial-flow and mixed-flow blades together with segmented blade structure, effectively solving the long-standing industrial problem of local gas accumulation within blade separation zones under high gas content operating conditions.

According to the appraisal conclusion, the pump fills a domestic technological gap with key performance indicators reaching internationally advanced standards. It provides high-efficiency domestic equipment for the transportation of difficult-to-handle media in oil refining, petrochemical and related industries.

Marching into Hydrometallurgy: Hard-Seated Ball Valves and Flash Valves Advance Side by Side

In May 2025, the China General Machinery Industry Association (CGMA) held a product appraisal meeting in Xi’an for two independently developed products from Xi’an Pump & Valve Works: Large-Bore Hard-Seated Ball Valve for Hydrometallurgy and Flash Valve for Hydrometallurgy (Model 300T647Y-40Ti).

To address the pain points of hydrometallurgy working conditions, including highly corrosive media, high solid content and severe erosion wear, the company developed a central flange double sealing structure with axial stem positioning, alongside quadruple stem sealing and quick-replaceable trim design.

The appraisal committee stated that both products feature independent intellectual property rights, and their key performance indicators have reached the advanced level of similar international products. Notably, the hard-seated ball valve excels in sealing reliability, while the flash valve delivers outstanding anti-cavitation performance.

The products have been successfully applied in landmark hydrometallurgy projects at home and abroad, including GEM, Lygend Resources and Tsingshan Holding Group. Further promotion and application are recommended.

Innovation Foundation: Full-Chain Independence from Materials to Systems

From ultra-low-temperature cryogenic valves to highly corrosion-resistant zirconium pumps and valves, and from complex gas-liquid two-phase flow transportation to severe erosion under extreme hydrometallurgy conditions, Xi’an Pump & Valve Works has consistently directed its innovation efforts at the weakest links in the industrial chain. To date, the company owns more than 140 independent intellectual property rights, including over 20 invention patents, and has participated in drafting 6 national standards and 5 industry standards.

Notably, according to research conducted by the China General Machinery Industry Association, the full-process special material vacuum smelting and casting production line invested and built by Xi’an Pump & Valve Works is currently the only dedicated production line completed and put into operation in China’s pump and valve manufacturing industry. The commissioning of this production line signifies that the enterprise has developed irreplaceable core technological capabilities in special material casting and process innovation. It delivers vital support for greatly improving the quality stability and working-condition adaptability of special industrial pumps and valves.
