Key Milestone Reached: Ball Valve of Unit 2 Hoisted at Guowang Xinyuan Funing Pumped‑Storage Power Station

Recently, the ball valve for Unit 2 of Guowang Xinyuan Hebei Funing Pumped‑Storage Power Station has been successfully hoisted into place, marking the full‑scale onset of the peak installation phase for the unit’s core components at the power station.

As a core component of units in pumped‑storage power stations, the ball valve is installed between the turbine spiral case and penstock, figuratively known as the “gatekeeper” for incoming upstream water of the unit.

The ball valve for Unit 2 in this hoisting operation features a nominal diameter of 2.3 m, a flange‑to‑flange distance of 3.296 m, a maximum static water head of 558 m and a design water head of 782 m, with a total weight of approximately 130.5 tons. Its installation center is 10 meters away from the unit centerline. The valve had to be lifted from the erection bay through the material hatch down to the spiral‑case floor before being horizontally shifted into position. Characterized by high difficulty and elevated risks, this hoisting work falls into the category of high‑risk sub‑projects.

Prior to hoisting, the project department rigorously implemented risk‑control measures for hazardous operations and set up a leading group for hoisting safety assurance. Specialized personnel conducted item‑by‑item inspections on the overhead crane’s safety braking system as well as its mechanical and electrical operating mechanisms. Load‑bearing capacity verification and visual inspection were carried out on special hoisting tools supplied by the manufacturer, including steel wire ropes and shackles, to guarantee sound equipment conditions. The project department also prepared a special construction scheme in advance and organized expert demonstration, clarified responsibilities for each post, and delivered safety‑technical disclosure to all operating personnel.

During hoisting, the “three‑lift‑three‑lower” trial‑lifting procedure was strictly followed. Close coordination was maintained between overhead crane operators and ground signalers. After nearly one hour of well‑organized work, the ball valve was precisely placed at its designed position. The whole operation proceeded smoothly and remained safely under control.

The successful hoisting of the Unit 2 ball valve lays a solid foundation for subsequent unit installation. Adhering to high standards and strict requirements, the project department will press ahead with follow‑up construction, help the power station achieve early commissioning and power generation, and contribute to regional energy‑structure optimization and green‑low‑carbon development.
